On the fence with the double blades...
My notes on the Starglide Skates:1. Boot is made of thin vinyl2. Boot does not provide any type of ankle support as balancing on them are quite easy3. There is a strong chemical-ish smell to them4. Blades cannot be sharpened5. Attention grabber at the rink - not many people are familiar or ever seen a double bladed skate beforeOriginally purchased the Lake Placid Starglide Double Runner skates for my three year old thinking it would be better for him to learn self balancing after trying out rental skates at our local rink. It turns out that he was actually balancing a little better on the ice with the single blade than with the double blades. He was also able to glide (albeit not too far before falling on his butt) on the single blade whereas the there was only "stomping steps" type movement on the double runners. After about two sessions with the starglides and noticing that he wasn't really enjoying himself as much as the first 2 times with rentals, we ended up purchasing a pair of traditional hockey skates for him. While I believe the double blades serve a purpose for really young kids - i.e. building confidence, able to stand and move on the ice without falling, etc. - these same kids will have to re-learn balancing when they move from the double to the single blades, so why not just start with the single? There are a few decent toddler/kids traditional skates out there that are priced about $10 more than the Starglides. Ones that come to mind are Lil' Champs by Bauer and Little Tykes by CCM.My Soap boxing:We've seen one too many little kids fall and hit their heads/face on the ice. PLEASE-PLEASE remember to put a helmet on your little ones! Have fun skating with your kids!

My son thinks they're cool.
My 6 year old son wanted to go skating with me so I decided to buy double runners. I figured they'd be better for him to balance on. He loves the design and says they're really comfortable, but I am disappointed by the blade. It doesn't appear I can have them sharpened, because they're coated. Also, like another review stated, he does more of a stomping motion instead of gliding with these. However, I am not professional when it comes to ice skates, and I just go skating for fun, so for all I know, this is how he would skate on a single blade. He had fun on them though and wants to go back out with me again.

Difficult to size but otherwise good product
I purchased this product for my grandson, who wears a size 9 shoe. Size 10 was too small so I sent it back and ordered size 12 - just to be safe. Size 12 was, of course, too big, so I ordered size 11 - that fit just right. I was a bit frustrated with the ordering and sending back so I kept the size 12 and donated it to charity. The skates are inexpensive. I probably would have done best to buy it locally where he could have tried them on.

Good skate for 1st time skaters.
It is a good skate. It does as described. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars is my daughter complained about how to stop. there is no toe pick. it is smooth at the front. I don't know maybe this is for safely reasons so they don't face plant themselves trying to stop. I also tried to find an adjustable double skate so I would have the advantage of my kid getting more than one season out of it but that feature is not found in double blades only single blades.

Great for new skaters!
These were perfect for our new skaters, ages 4 and 5. This was our first year skating and it was so much fun with the ease of the double blades, and less back-breaking for Mom and Dad having to hold them up on single blades!!!! The skates have a plastic smell that doesn't seem to fade, but boy, they were definitely worth the money. I'm bummed we'll will out grow them for next year as they only run up to size 13.

Great beginner skates
My son loves them I love them too. the blades are not too far from the bottom of the shoe so it feels more secure. It also looks like a sneaker. I bought a size too big but he doesn't complain so I'm keeping it
