Rimadyl is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) approved by the FDA for once- or twice-daily dosing to relieve the pain and inflammation in the joints of dogs with arthritis. Did You Know? 20% of dogs over 1 year of age in the United States are believed to be suffering from osteoarthritis. However, many dogs with this disease remain undiagnosed and never get the treatment they need. Human arthritis medications like aspirin can be toxic to your dog. Dogs should not be given aspirin because it can potentially harm joint cartilage and the structure of healthy joints. Aspirin can also cause gastrointestinal (GI) and kidney problems. Osteoarthritis can be treated but cannot be cured — that’s why it’s important for you to continue to treat your dog’s arthritis even if he or she seems better. As the disease progresses, there can be additional destruction of cartilage and damage to other parts of the joint, as well as production of extra bone around the joint. Long-term treatment provides continuous improvement in your dog’s arthritis pain and mobility, allowing your dog to continue participating in and enjoying the family activities you love to do together.
